About Me

David Thompson enjoys exploring new topics in history and teaching others about them. After finishing his Ph.D., he plans to search for a position as a Professor of Public History, likely with a focus on Memory Studies and African American History. With his background in museums and archives, Thompson might also pursue work in the field of preservation.
Interests
David Thompson’s earliest interest in history was the Italian Renaissance. The exquisite sculptures and architectural structures, along with their historical significance, consistently captivate his interest. To Thompson, culture and collective memory are profoundly fascinating areas of study. When he visited Mississippi in 2015, he began to see that the dominant culture of a community and the memorialization of its history do not always align. Truth be told, Thompson never intended to focus on American history, but his research coincided with the boom in intellectual interest in the morality of the cultural impact of Confederate Monuments. He was deeply inspired by his professors to explore the history of disenfranchised groups and work with the conflict of memory in public spaces.
